The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Clumber Spaniel has a broad, low body, a large head and shorter legs than many other spaniels. Predominantly white hair is complemented by soft lemon or orange markings. Longer hair covers the ears, underside and limbs. It looks massive, but movement should remain free; when searching it moves evenly and examines terrain thoroughly.
Its development is linked to Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire and the Dukes of Newcastle's breeding. A flushing-spaniel type working in dense vegetation at a fairly steady pace became established there. The story of ancestors arriving from France belongs to breed-origin tradition but does not fully explain its ancestry. Methodical searching became the key working trait, valued above sudden speed.
It is usually gentle, composed and devoted to familiar people. It is not always as demonstrative as lighter spaniels but enjoys close family contact. It can pursue an interesting scent for a long time and be determined once it has chosen its own course.
