The Cirneco dell’Etna is a slender, lightly built dog with very large upright ears and short red hair. It has a narrow head, long legs and a strongly tucked-up belly. Although it resembles a small sighthound, smell is particularly important when finding game. Its delicate appearance combines with agility and sure movement over rocky ground.
The breed has long been associated with Sicily, especially the area around Etna. Dogs hunted rabbits hiding among rocks and solidified lava, using smell, hearing and sight to locate shelters. “Dell’Etna” was added to the name when the first Italian standard was approved in 1939.
The Cirneco is lively, alert and strongly attached to familiar people. It can be an affectionate companion while independently choosing where to explore. An interesting scent quickly absorbs its attention and encourages persistent searching.
