The Chongqing Dog has a compact, muscular body, short hair and small erect ears. A broad head and strong jaws give it a determined appearance. Its distinctive naturally short, high-set tail is thick at the base and tapers, resembling a bamboo shoot. It should not be confused with a surgically shortened tail.
It descends from local dogs of southwestern China associated with Chongqing. They assisted hunters and guarded homes. Modern breeding maintains a distinct native Chinese dog type. It is sometimes confused with the Chuandong Hound, but organisations maintaining these populations treat them separately.
It is usually attentive to its surroundings and strongly attached to familiar people. It can clearly signal a stranger's arrival and initially watch a new situation rather than immediately seek contact. With household members it may be much more relaxed and eager to participate. It is agile, reacts quickly and readily acts on its own initiative.
