The Chinese Crested occurs in hairless and coated varieties, the latter called Powderpuff. In the hairless form, hair is concentrated mainly on the head, feet and tail tip, although coverage varies. Powderpuffs have soft, long coats over the whole body. Both are light, slender and agile, with expressive eyes and delicately built heads.
Its earliest origins remain unclear. Stories of ancient China accompany the name, but not all can be supported by reliable documentation. Cresteds appeared at American shows in the late nineteenth century yet remained rare for a long time. Modern breeding developed them chiefly as companions. Hairless and coated puppies may occur in the same litter.
Cresteds are usually sensitive, cheerful and deeply attached to familiar people. They seek contact, watch the household and join games. They can be bold and inventive in familiar surroundings but initially reserved with strangers. They respond quickly to human moods and changes in routine. A light build suits active games, often revealing considerable dexterity.
