The smooth-coated Chihuahua is a very small dog with a rounded head, large eyes and widely set ears. The short coat lies close to its compact, active body. Its tail is carried high in a curve or partial curl. The large ears readily reveal interest as they turn towards new sounds.
The breed takes its name from the Mexican state of Chihuahua, where foreign buyers acquired small dogs in the late nineteenth century. Their ancestry is traditionally linked to earlier Mexican dogs, including the Techichi, although the exact continuity remains uncertain. Modern breeding also developed in the United States. Smooth-coated and long-haired varieties share a history and belong to one breed.
Chihuahuas are generally alert, active and closely attached to particular people. They may initiate play boldly while keeping their distance from strangers. Movement and sounds attract quick responses, often with barking to gain attention. They can express their preferences firmly. In safe, familiar surroundings, they usually seek closeness and take part in household activities.
