The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Chien d'Artois is a strong, muscular hound with a relatively short body. It has a broad head, long drooping ears and a short tricoloured coat. It looks substantial while retaining energetic, free movement. Its build suits a dog that persistently covers ground, without excessive lightness or very long limbs.
Formerly also called the Picard, it was particularly valued in French hare hunting. Crosses with other hounds gradually made the old type harder to preserve, and wars further reduced the population. After the Second World War there were even fears that the breed had disappeared entirely. In the early seventies of the twentieth century, Audrechy and Pilat began work that enabled breeding to be restored.
The Artois is usually balanced and affectionate towards familiar people. It is comfortable in a group of dogs and shows considerable initiative while working. A trail can focus its attention intensely; it readily investigates thickets and does not give up at the first obstacle. Its high, carrying voice can be heard from far away. In everyday contact it may be much calmer than when active outdoors.
