The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a powerful dog with a broad head, light eyes and a short, very dense coat. Hair is slightly wavy over the shoulders, back and loins. Brown and straw shades resemble shoreline vegetation. A deep chest, strong feet and athletic build combine power with sustained swimming ability.
It developed around Chesapeake Bay in the United States. Local water dogs were selected to retrieve birds from cold water, including in wind and difficult weather. A protective coat, endurance and the ability to locate game independently were especially important. These demands differed from work on dry land and strongly shaped the breed.
Usually bold, intelligent and persistent, it can be affectionate and cheerful with familiar people while initially observing strangers. It is distinctly watchful and inclined to assess situations independently. Interesting tasks readily engage it, with water and retrieving objects for its person often prompting particular enthusiasm.
