The Český Fousek is a strong pointing dog with a rough coat, beard and dense eyebrows. Its appearance is rugged, but attentive eyes soften its expression. A strong body, deep chest and capable legs allow sustained outdoor movement. The harsh coat closely protects the body without forming a long, ornamental covering.
Before the First World War, dogs of this type were widely used pointing dogs in what are now Czechia and Slovakia. The war and its aftermath sharply reduced numbers, and the breed nearly disappeared in the twenties. Restoration used surviving typical individuals. Planned breeding established the modern Fousek as a versatile helper for finding, pointing and retrieving game.
It is usually attached to its handler and cooperative, including in tasks requiring patience. In the field it shows persistence and readily enters dense vegetation to follow scent. It can use initiative without entirely losing interest in people. With household members it may be calmer and affectionate. Its engagement is particularly clear when asked to find something: it focuses readily and does not give up at the first difficulty.
