Cavalier King Charles Spaniel — size comparison — facts and sources

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small dog with large dark eyes and a gentle expression. Silky hair covers the long ears and forms feathering on the legs and tail. Its balanced body is moderately sturdy, and its muzzle is distinctly longer than the King Charles Spaniel’s. Four traditional colours include chestnut and white Blenheim and solid red Ruby.

The breed recalls small spaniels in portraits of historic British courts. Much shorter muzzles became fashionable in the nineteenth century. In 1926 Roswell Eldridge offered prizes at Crufts for spaniels resembling the older type, encouraging its restoration. A Cavalier club formed two years later, and Britain’s Kennel Club recognised a separate breed in 1945.

Cavaliers are generally affectionate, cheerful and sociable. They enjoy resting near their people but can show surprising energy and interest in birds on walks. Many readily join games and watch family members’ responses closely.
