The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Caucasian Shepherd Dog is powerful, with a broad head, strong legs and a deep body. A dense coat with abundant underfur protects against bad weather; long-haired dogs develop a mane and full tail. Males are usually noticeably more substantial than females. Even at rest the outline conveys strength, while movement is steady and purposeful.
It descends from flock and homestead guardians in the Caucasus and southern Russian steppes. Communities selected dogs resistant to harsh weather and capable of defending against predators. More organised breeding began in the Soviet Union in the 1920s. Local types were combined to establish the modern large guardian.
It is usually confident and highly independent. It forms strong attachments to familiar people while clearly distinguishing them from strangers. It may observe quietly for a long time, then react quickly to an intrusion. It assesses newcomers cautiously and guards according to its own judgement. Territoriality, firmness and lasting memory of experience are especially important in its behaviour.
