The Çatalburun is a Turkish hunting dog with short hair, a strong body and hanging ears. Its most unusual feature is a deeply divided nose, reflected in its name, meaning forked nose. Otherwise it resembles a sturdy pointing dog capable of sustained movement across country.
This local population is associated with Tarsus in southern Turkey. Dogs were chiefly kept for partridge hunting and selected for their ability to find birds. Their earliest origins are poorly documented. The Spanish Pachón Navarro also has a divided nose, but a relationship between the populations remains uncertain.
Primarily focused on scent, the Çatalburun can search patiently for long periods before stopping distinctly at located game. It combines independent scent work with contact with its handler. Available accounts chiefly describe hunting work; everyday temperament in this rare population is less well documented.
