The Catalan Sheepdog is a medium-sized, agile dog with a long, dense coat. Hair on its head forms a beard, moustache and fringe, giving it a shaggy appearance. Its body is strong without being heavy, and its legs are capable. From a distance the coat may seem a single colour, although it consists of hairs in different shades.
The breed originated in the Catalan Pyrenees and spread to other pastoral areas of Catalonia. These dogs helped direct flocks and guarded the animals entrusted to them. They worked in changing weather and on uneven ground, often some distance from people. Selection favoured stamina and the ability to respond independently when part of a flock strayed or a threat appeared.
It is attentive, quick to learn and deeply devoted to its handler. In familiar situations it can remain calm while quickly recognising when action is needed. It willingly cooperates but does not always wait for another command if it has spotted a problem itself. It can be reserved with strangers, observing them first. This reserve accompanies a close attachment to its family and keen interest in the activities of familiar people.
