The Catahoula Bulldog is a Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog–American Bulldog cross. Usually strong and shorthaired, it varies in head width, leg length and body mass. Coats may be solid, patched or merle. Striking eyes and patterns occur in some offspring but are not universal.
Both parent breeds descend from American farm dogs with histories of cattle work, hunting and guarding. Crossing them aimed to produce a strong, versatile helper. Catahoula Bulldog nevertheless denotes a cross rather than the same population as the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog.
Offspring may be active, alert and independent. Interest in moving animals, reaction intensity and openness to strangers vary, partly with parental lines and successive generations. Close attachment to an owner can coexist with considerable initiative during exploration.
