The York Chocolate is a semi-longhaired cat known chiefly for its deep chocolate coat. Soft hair and a bushy tail give it a fuller outline. Its breeding history also included paler colour varieties and cats with white markings.
The breed developed from farm cats in New York State. The documented line begins with Brownie, a female born in 1983. Its name combined its origin with its most distinctive coat colour. The York Chocolate is now very rare, and breeding continuity is poorly documented; historical accounts cannot be treated as a picture of a large modern population.
