The Somali has an athletic, muscular outline and a semi-long coat with pronounced ticking. Alternating colour bands on each hair create warm shading. A full tail, ruff and longer hair on the hind legs give it a foxlike appearance. Large ears emphasise its alert expression.
The Somali developed from long-haired kittens appearing in Abyssinian breeding lines. Their build and colouring were retained while longer hair became the basis of a separate breed. Its name refers to neighbouring Somalia and former Abyssinia, emphasising the relationship between the breeds.
Somalis are generally active, curious and attentive to people. They enjoy climbing, investigating corners and watching the home from above. They quickly notice new objects and changes in routine. Play combines dexterity with persistence, and they often suggest the next activity themselves.
