The Sokoke has a slender, muscular body, long legs and short, close-fitting hair. Its most distinctive feature is a brown classic-tabby pattern resembling wood grain. Alternating colour bands on individual hairs lighten the centres of some markings and give the coat particular depth.
It descends from Kenyan coastal cats associated with the Arabuko-Sokoke forest area. Breeding outside Africa began in the late 1970s. African Shorthair was also used initially, and FIFe recognised the breed as Sokoke in 1994.
It is usually active, alert and an accomplished climber. It enjoys watching from high places before quickly joining games. It can form strong attachments and communicate through varied sounds while remaining independent in exploring its surroundings.
