The Snowshoe has an athletic, muscular body, blue eyes and darker colourpoint markings. White feet and an inverted facial V form its most recognisable pattern. White distribution is individual, however, and difficult to predict precisely within a litter. Its short coat lies close to the body and has little underfur.
The breed originated in the United States. In the 1960s, kittens with white feet appeared in a Siamese litter in Philadelphia. Further breeding, also involving American Shorthairs, established the appearance. Snowshoe refers to the pale feet.
Snowshoes are generally sociable, quick to learn and closely attached to family. They readily join household activities, investigate objects with a paw and communicate softly. Play can reveal considerable dexterity and persistence.
