The Selkirk Rex has a strong body, a rounded head and a dense, naturally curly coat. In the short-haired variety, curls resemble soft, springy tufts. Their form and abundance may change with age and season; kittens sometimes temporarily develop straighter hair. Whiskers may also curl.
The breed descends from Miss DePesto, a female born in Montana in 1987. Breeding established her unusual coat. A dominant mutation is responsible, distinct from those in Cornish and Devon Rexes. A long-haired Selkirk variety also exists.
It is generally gentle, patient and happy among people. It may quietly watch family members before joining a game. It often initiates contact while maintaining a moderate pace of daily activity.
