The Scottish Fold has a rounded head, large eyes and ears that fold forwards, making the head appear especially round. It occurs with short or semi-long hair in many colours. Often described as gentle and sociable, its activity may nevertheless be limited by pain associated with the breed’s defining physical trait.
The folded ears result from a mutation affecting cartilage development. The same genetic change causes osteochondrodysplasia, which also affects bones and joints. Severity varies, but the link between ear shape and disease is fundamental to the breed. FIFe does not recognise it or permit its breeding or exhibition. Describing the ears therefore requires acknowledging their consequences for mobility and welfare.
