The Ragdoll is a large cat with a long, strong body, a silky semi-long coat and blue eyes. Darker ears, face, legs and tail contrast with a paler body; the amount of white depends on the colour pattern. Kittens are pale at birth and develop their colouring gradually. Full size may not be reached until around four years of age.
The breed originated in California in the 1960s. Ann Baker bred selected domestic cats, including descendants of a white long-haired female named Josephine. Selection favoured a particular appearance and gentle temperament. The name refers to the relaxed posture some individuals adopt when held.
Ragdolls are often affectionate and interested in human company. They may rest near family members, follow them around and enjoy gentle play. Many learn to retrieve toys or respond when called.
