The short-haired Munchkin has ordinary feline body proportions but distinctly shortened limbs. Its coat is springy and plush, with head and ears proportional to the body. Normal-legged kittens also occur in litters.
The modern breed developed in the United States by establishing a dominant mutation affecting limb-bone growth. Its name refers to the small inhabitants of Oz. TICA granted championship status in 2003, while FIFe does not recognise breeds based on this structural trait.
Munchkins are usually curious and enjoy games with small objects. They run, track moving toys and investigate floor-level corners. They often seek human company and take interest in activities, while short legs chiefly affect movement and negotiating heights.
