The Mandalay has the compact, muscular build of the Burmese and a short, glossy, fully coloured coat. Medium-sized, it feels heavier when lifted than its appearance suggests. Colours include black, chocolate, blue, cinnamon and red.

It developed in New Zealand from Burmese-type cats. The NZCF standard retains their essential structure, distinguishing the Mandalay chiefly by coat and eye colour. The two breeds may be crossed within this programme. A black Mandalay can resemble a Bombay, but has a different breeding history and its own standard.
