The Japanese Bobtail has a slender, athletic body and slightly longer hind legs. Its naturally short tail consists of an individual arrangement of bent vertebrae concealed beneath the fur. The short coat has little underfur. Tricolour mi-ke is best known, but many other colours occur.
The breed is associated with centuries of short-tailed cats in Japan. Their image entered art and everyday culture. The tricolour bobtail became one inspiration for maneki-neko, the raised-paw cat figurine associated with good fortune.
It is usually active, sociable and communicative. It enjoys household activities, readily joins games and quickly learns their rules. It jumps nimbly and uses its paws to investigate objects. Contact with people often involves soft, varied vocalisations.
