The longhaired Japanese Bobtail has a slender body, springy legs and silky hair. Its naturally short tail is concealed in a pompom that may resemble a chrysanthemum flower. The arrangement of bent vertebrae is individual. Tricoloured mi-ke is particularly recognisable, although other colours occur.
The variety shares its origins with shorthaired Japanese Bobtails, long present in Japanese culture. Long hair emphasises the pompom without changing the basic body type.
It is usually active, sociable and communicative. It readily plays, carries small objects and accompanies people. It often answers vocally, combining talkativeness with considerable curiosity.
