The Isle of Man Shorthair has a round head, broad chest and compact, strong body. A full, normal-length tail tapering to a rounded tip distinguishes it from the tailless Manx. Its back is medium-length and less arched.

NZCF judges it under a separate standard as a tailed member of the Manx group. Other organisations may register similar cats as a variant of that group. Its short coat comes in recognised British-type colours, offering a broad range while retaining the same strong, rounded build.
