The Isle of Man Longhair has a round head, strong bone and compact body. Silky, semi-long hair forms breeches, toe tufts and an abundant plume on a full tail. The back is medium-length, with less rounded proportions than the tailless Cymric.

Within NZCF it is judged separately as a tailed relative of the Cymric and Manx. The standard distinguishes shorthaired and longhaired varieties. Other federations may treat such cats as Manx-group variants, so Isle of Man Longhair refers chiefly to the New Zealand breeding framework.
