The Highlander is large and muscular, with powerful hind legs, a naturally short tail and ears curling backwards at the tips. Shorter and longer coats occur. The tail remains mobile, with bends varying between individuals.

The programme began in 2004, adopting Highlander the following year. Domestic gene-pool cats were used. TICA treats it as a developing new breed.

It usually shows strong interest in people and readily initiates play. It chases objects, climbs and investigates novelty. TICA describes it as active and sociable while relatively seldom demanding attention vocally.
