The Exotic Shorthair has a stocky body, short legs and a round head with small ears. Large eyes and a shortened muzzle resemble the Persian’s. The main difference is a dense, short, plush coat that stands away from the body. Many colours and patterns occur.

The breed developed in the United States through breeding Persians with short-haired cats. Selection established the Persian head and body type while retaining a shorter coat. It therefore belongs to the closely related Persian breed group. Its appearance results from twentieth-century selective breeding.

Exotics are usually gentle and quiet and interested in household company. They enjoy resting near people but also respond to a moving toy or the sounds of play. Many calmly initiate contact with a paw or by approaching. Activity often consists of shorter bursts interspersed with attentive observation.
