The Cymric has a compact, rounded body, strong hindquarters and longer hind legs than forelegs. Semi-long hair forms full breeches and a ruff. Tail lengths vary, although the entirely tailless show type is best known.
It is the long-haired relative of the Manx from the Isle of Man. Long hair appeared in Manx litters before forming the basis of a separately developed variety; TICA recognised the Cymric in 1979. The tail-shortening mutation can also disrupt development of the spine and nervous system.
Cymrics can be attached to family, watchful and playful. They often enjoy retrieving objects and following a moving toy. In quieter moments they like observing from a chosen place near a person.
