British Shorthair — size comparison — facts and sources

The British Shorthair has a stocky, muscular body, a round head and full cheeks. Its short coat is very dense and plush, and the thick tail has a rounded tip. Blue cats with copper eyes are especially familiar, but many other colours and patterns occur. Strong bone and a full coat contribute to its substantial appearance.

It descends from British domestic cats. Local shorthairs were among the first cats shown in the nineteenth century, including at London’s Crystal Palace in 1871. Selective breeding established the round head and solid body. After the world wars, other breeds, including Persians, contributed to rebuilding the population.

Usually calm and gentle, it is attached to household members but often chooses the timing of closer contact. Many rest near their people without being as demonstrative as oriental breeds. They enjoy short games and attentive observation and readily learn household routines and favourite resting places.
