Bengal — size comparison — facts and sources

The Bengal has a strong, agile body and a short, soft coat with a bold pattern. The coat may be spotted with rosettes or marbled. Some individuals have a subtle golden sheen called glitter. Strong hind legs, a long body and a broad muzzle give it an athletic appearance.

The breed developed in the United States from crosses between domestic cats and the Asian leopard cat, Prionailurus bengalensis. Jean Mill’s breeding programmes, especially from the 1980s, were important. Modern Bengals are bred with other Bengals; the earliest hybrid generations have a distinct breeding status.

Bengals are generally curious, active and persistent explorers. They climb, investigate toy mechanisms and follow human activities. Many are interested in running water, sinks and baths. They can be vocal and quick to learn how to attract attention. Close relationships with people coexist with considerable initiative during play.
