The American Wirehair has a strong, balanced body and broad head, resembling its relative the American Shorthair. Its distinctive coat is harsh and springy: bent or curled hairs give a fine wirelike texture. Whiskers may also be wavy.
The breed began with a natural mutation seen in a farm litter in New York State in 1966. Breeders established the new hair texture using American Shorthairs. The trait is dominant and differs genetically from the wavy coats of Cornish and Devon Rexes.
It is usually calm in contact but watches its surroundings attentively. It enjoys hunting games and reacts to moving small objects. It often accompanies people without constantly demanding attention, moving smoothly from shared play to independent rest.
