American Shorthair — size comparison — facts and sources
The American Shorthair has a solid, muscular body, strong legs and a broad head. Its dense, short coat occurs in many traditional colours. Silver cats with dark classic tabby markings are particularly recognisable. Its build remains balanced and athletic, without extremely elongated or shortened body parts.
Its ancestors accompanied European settlers to North America, helping protect supplies from rodents aboard ships and in homes and farms. Later show breeding established a strong local type. Today the name identifies a particular pedigreed breed, rather than every short-haired cat living in America.
American Shorthairs are generally gentle, sociable and fairly independent. They watch household members and enjoy games, then may rest in a place of their own. Small moving objects quickly attract attention, and hunting games reveal strength and coordination. Many approach unfamiliar situations calmly rather than reacting immediately to every stimulus.
