American Curl Shorthair — size comparison — facts and sources
The short-haired American Curl has a balanced, moderately muscular body and a silky coat with little underfur. Ear tips gently curling backwards are its defining feature. Kittens are born with straight ears, which begin to change shape after a few days.
The breed descends from Shulamith, a black long-haired female found in California in 1981. A natural dominant mutation affecting ear shape appeared in her offspring and was established through breeding. The American Curl occurs in two coat lengths.
It is usually friendly and curious and retains an interest in play for a long time. It enjoys watching people, investigating new objects and approaching to make contact. Lively activity can often give way readily to shared rest near family.
