The American Bobtail has a broad, rectangular body, strong bone and a large head. Its naturally short tail is mobile and varies in length. The short double coat is springy; the full, substantial adult form develops gradually, potentially taking three years.
A short-tailed cat named Yodie, found in the United States, played an important founding role. Breeders established his trait using similarly built domestic cats. The appearance recalls a bobcat, but such wild ancestry has not been confirmed.
It is usually sociable, curious and cooperative in play. It may retrieve, respond to simple signals and investigate new tasks. It enjoys household company, and calm interactions often accompany persistent pursuit of a toy.
