The Abyssinian has a light, muscular body, long legs and large, alert ears. Its short coat is ticked: individual hairs have alternating bands of colour. This gives the body a warm, shaded appearance without broad conventional stripes. Large eyes and springy movement reflect its interest in its surroundings.
The modern breed was shaped in Britain. Its name is linked to cats exhibited in the nineteenth century as imports from Abyssinia, now Ethiopia. Their exact origins remain uncertain, and genetic research also indicates links with populations around Indian Ocean coasts. Resemblance to ancient Egyptian images does not establish direct descent.
Abyssinians often enjoy climbing, investigating objects and observing from high places. Shared activity may appeal more than prolonged lap sitting. They quickly learn games and ways to reach interesting places, following people with curiosity and remaining ready to explore.
