The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Carolina Dog has a light, slightly elongated build, large erect ears and a strongly tucked-up belly. It often has ginger colouring, although other colours also occur. Its distinctive tail may have a hook-like tip. It looks natural and capable, ready to observe and explore its surroundings.
Modern breeding draws on free-ranging dog populations in the southeastern United States. Animals found there attracted researchers and became the foundation of a registered breed. The informal name American dingo refers to appearance and a former way of life; the Carolina Dog is not an Australian dingo. The United Kennel Club recognised it in 1995.
It is usually cautious in new situations and does not seek contact with everyone it meets. It may need time to approach, investigate scents and become accustomed to a stranger. Within a familiar group it forms strong bonds while retaining independence. It watches attentively and notices small changes quickly.
