The Canadian Eskimo Dog is a powerful sled dog with a broad chest and strong legs. A dense double coat forms a pronounced ruff, and the well-haired tail curls over the back. It has upright ears, a broad head and strong muzzle. Its build suits hauling and sustained effort in an Arctic climate.
Its history is closely linked to the Inuit of Arctic Canada. Dogs transported people and goods, carried packs and helped in hunting, including locating seal breathing holes. Changes in northern life caused a sharp population decline. Breeding recovery used surviving dogs from Inuit communities, including those on the Boothia and Melville peninsulas and Baffin Island.
It is energetic and responds intensely to opportunities for work, food or play. It often shows curious, friendly interest in people. Other dogs matter strongly, and group life includes cooperation and conflict. It retains considerable independence and hunting instinct. Endurance appears during movement, with sustained engagement and persistent pursuit of a goal.
