The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Canaan Dog has a light, almost square body, upright ears and a bushy tail curled over its back. Short to medium-length hair covers dense underfur. Colours vary, and dark eyes give an attentive expression. Its build supports efficient movement over difficult ground.
The modern breed was developed in Israel from local Middle Eastern dogs living near human settlements. These populations were adapted to dry conditions and independent life around people. Breeding used their alertness and guarding abilities. The documented history of the standardised breed is much shorter than that of its regional ancestors.
It usually quickly notices unusual sounds, scents and unfamiliar people. It may first watch from a distance before approaching. Strongly bonded to its family and willing to join familiar activities, it nevertheless assesses its surroundings independently.
