The Buldogue Campeiro is a strong, muscular dog with a short coat, broad head and powerful jaws. It has a compact body and a longer muzzle than the most short-faced bulldogs. Its build permits free movement, acceleration and changes of direction. Its appearance recalls its connection with farm work, where agility was also necessary.
The breed developed in southern Brazil from bulldogs brought by European settlers. It helped find and catch cattle in open country and native woodland, then move them to a chosen location. These dogs were also used in former slaughterhouses. The name Campeiro refers to the rural setting in which this working type became established.
The Campeiro is generally alert, calm and strongly attached to its owner. It does not usually vocalise constantly but watches situations attentively. During shared activities it can show great persistence and steadily pursue a goal. It can be gentle and sociable towards familiar people. Quiet rest may quickly give way to decisive action when something appears that it considers worth investigating or protecting.
