The Calupoh is a large, agile dog with erect ears, long legs and a wolf-like head. Its dense coat is often dark and forms a fuller neck ruff in adults. Light eyes strengthen the wolf resemblance, although darker eyes also occur. In motion it appears springy and strong, without a mastiff's heavy build.
It is a modern Mexican breed developed through a programme involving dogs and wolves since the nineties of the twentieth century. The project draws on archaeological finds and the importance of canids in pre-Hispanic cultures. This does not, however, demonstrate uninterrupted breeding of the same breed since antiquity. Today's Calupoh results from deliberate selection in a much more recent period.
Breeders describe it as active, attentive and bonded with its family. It may be reserved with strangers while readily joining shared activities in familiar surroundings. Great agility accompanies readiness to explore independently. Because the population has a particular breeding history, an individual dog's ancestry and experiences matter in assessing behaviour, rather than wolf-like appearance alone.
