The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Cairn Terrier is small and sturdy, with harsh hair and short upright ears. It has a broad head, dark eyes and an alert expression emphasised by standing hair. Coats may be cream, red, grey or brindle and can change with age. A moderately short body and strong feet support agility over rough ground.
It comes from Scotland, where small terriers found and flushed animals concealed in rocky crevices and stone piles. These cairns gave its name. Local terriers initially varied in appearance; pedigree breeding later separated the Cairn from related Scottish dogs while preserving small size and working ability.
It is usually bold, curious and strongly interested in things near the ground. It enjoys investigating gaps, scenting and digging. With familiar people it can be cheerful and playful, while an absorbing search may make it persist with its own ideas.
