Ca de Bou (Majorcan Mastiff) — size comparison — facts and sources

The Ca de Bou, or Majorcan Mastiff, is a stocky, muscular dog with a short coat and broad head. Males have particularly substantial heads, but the body remains compact and capable. It has strong jaws, dark eyes and small ears folded backwards. Colours include brindle, fawn and black.

The breed developed on Majorca from large working dogs brought to the Balearic Islands and local lines. Maritime connections encouraged the exchange of animals used to protect ports and estates. Its history also includes former dog fighting and bull-baiting, reflected in the name Ca de Bou. The first official entry in the Spanish studbook dates from 1928.

In familiar surroundings the Ca de Bou is generally calm and confident. It likes staying with its family and can be affectionate and direct with its owner. At the same time it responds attentively to events on its territory. It may watch a stranger before deciding to approach. When aroused its behaviour becomes very determined, contrasting clearly with quiet rest beside household members.
