The Bullmastiff is a large, powerful dog with a broad head, short muzzle and deep chest. Its smooth coat is fawn, red or brindle with a dark mask. A compact muscular body combines strength with reasonably agile movement, important in its original work.
Developed in Britain from Mastiffs and Bulldogs, it helped gamekeepers detect and restrain poachers. Courage, determination and cooperation with people in difficult situations were needed. This history explains its protective tradition, although it later also became a family companion.
Usually strongly bonded to its household, it can rest calmly with familiar people. It watches its surroundings and often assesses strangers cautiously. It need not react to every small change, but can act decisively when something seems significant. Attachment often appears as close companionship without constant demands for energetic play.
