The Broholmer is a large, substantial dog with a rectangular body, broad head and short coat. A strong neck and deep chest emphasise its powerful build. Its ears drop beside the head, and calm eyes give it a composed expression. It moves decisively while retaining the freedom needed by a former working dog on extensive estates.
It descends from Denmark's tradition of large hunting and guarding dogs. Its name commemorates the Broholm estate and Count Sehested's breeding. After the Second World War the breed approached disappearance. In the seventies of the twentieth century, enthusiasts and the Danish canine organisation began restoring the population. Modern breeding therefore also results from efforts to save an old Danish dog type.
The Broholmer is generally composed, friendly and confident. Among household members it readily maintains close contact without constant excitability. It watches its surroundings attentively and can clearly express interest in unfamiliar people or unusual sounds. Its watchfulness is usually calm: it first observes a situation, then decides how to respond.
