The Briquet Griffon Vendéen is a medium-sized hound with a rough, tousled coat. A beard, bushy eyebrows and long ears give it a distinctive appearance, but beneath the abundant hair is a compact, capable dog. It is longer-legged than the Vendéen Bassets yet distinctly smaller than the Grand Griffon from the same region.
It comes from the Vendée in western France. Its name can be translated as 'medium-sized dog'. Before the First World War, Count d'Elva began planned selection to reduce the size of the local Grand Griffon. Wars repeatedly reduced breed numbers; after the Second World War, breeding was restored in places including Fontenay-le-Comte. These dogs worked in small packs on both large and smaller game.
The Briquet readily searches independently and does not easily abandon an interesting trail. It can pass through thorny thickets and change direction quickly on uneven ground. Tracking is accompanied by a carrying voice, allowing people to follow its work from a distance. Its independence is particularly apparent when game scent becomes more important than other stimuli.
