The Briquet de Provence is a medium-sized scent hound with strong legs, a somewhat elongated body and short hair. It has hanging ears and raises its tail in a curve when working eagerly. Its build combines endurance with fast, free movement. Less substantial than large French hounds, it retains a distinctly functional appearance.
It developed in south-eastern France. Its earlier type was described in the 1930s, and after declining interest Jacques Bolla revived breeding in the 1980s. A club formed in 2003. Hare hunting was the traditional speciality; dogs were also used with boar, valued for accurate tracking.
It is usually gentle with its handler and sociable with familiar dogs. Outdoors it retains considerable initiative, investigating scents and persistently checking their direction. It signals game with regular, carrying calls. It can act quickly while retaining caution around wild quarry.
