The Brazilian Terrier is a lightly built, agile dog with a short, smooth coat. Dark patches and distinctive head markings stand out against a white background. It has fairly long legs, ears that fold at the tips and a distinctly attentive expression. Its athletic build allows rapid changes of direction, jumping and efficient movement between obstacles.
The breed developed from small terriers imported from Europe around the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and crossed with local dogs. On Brazilian farms they helped guard the premises and control rodents. Selection for everyday work reinforced alertness, speed and independence. The population's appearance was gradually standardised, retaining a short coat and light build well suited to an active life in the local climate.
It is lively, inquisitive and very quick to respond to stimuli. Among familiar people it usually shows affection and a strong desire to play, while it may be suspicious of strangers. Moving objects and small animals easily attract its attention. It closely follows household events, often being the first to notice a new sound or someone at the entrance.
