The Braque du Bourbonnais is a relatively small, muscular dog with a rounded head and drooping ears. Fine brown or fawn ticking densely covers its white coat. Some dogs are born with naturally short tails. Its build is compact and capable, and a gentle expression suits its calm manner with people.
The breed is associated with France’s Bourbonnais region and appears in old accounts of hunting dogs. During the 1930s, breeders focused too narrowly on a particular coat shade and short tails, restricting selection. Numbers declined. Reconstruction began in the 1970s, restoring greater emphasis on capability and working ability.
At home it can be gentle, affectionate and keen to stay near people. Outdoors it readily searches, using its nose and adapting to the terrain. It can cooperate attentively and indicates birds by pointing.
