The Braque d'Auvergne is a strong, harmoniously built dog with long drooping ears and a short coat. Fine black ticking covers white body areas, sometimes accompanied by larger patches. Its head is generally darker, and gentle eyes give it a calm expression. A proportionate outline permits efficient movement without excessive heaviness.
It comes from Cantal in France's Auvergne region. Local hunters selected dogs over generations to find and point birds in regional conditions. This local tradition is the best-documented part of breed history; stories about distant ancestors remain less certain. Breeding established a versatile type with a good nose and a tendency to maintain human contact while searching.
It is usually gentle, affectionate and clearly bonded with its handler. It readily responds to guidance and approaches new tasks with interest. At home it often seeks closeness, while outdoors it shows persistence and enthusiasm for investigating scents. Its calm expression reflects friendliness towards people, although it can act with considerable energy and concentration during activity.
